The founding figure of Northern Song Neo-Confucianism, known as Master Lianxi. He authored the Explanation of the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate and the Comprehensive Penetration, creatively integrating Daoist cosmogony with Confucian moral philosophy of mind and nature. He established the Heavenly Principle as ontological ground through "the Limitless and thence the Supreme Ultimate," and used "Sincerity" as the pivot connecting Heaven and humanity, laying the metaphysical foundation for the Cheng brothers' Luo Learning and Zhu Xi's Min Learning. He is acclaimed as the true founder of Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism.
Zhou Dunyi, courtesy name Maoshu, a native of Yingdao in Daozhou (modern Dao County, Hunan). Orphaned young, he was raised by his maternal uncle Zheng Xiang. He held minor local posts such as registrar in Fenning and judicial administrator in Nan'an, governing with integrity and justice, once offending superiors by insisting on handling cases according to law, yet never retreating. While serving at Nan'an, Cheng Xiang, impressed by his extraordinary bearing, had his two sons Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi study under him. Zhou instructed the two Chengs to "seek the joy of Confucius and Yan Hui," thereby inaugurating the Luo school of learning. In his later years he served as prefect of Nankang, building a residence below Lotus Peak on Mount Lu, with the Lianxi stream flowing before his door—hence his sobriquet, Master Lianxi. His official career was modest, yet his scholarly attainment was extraordinary: with only a few thousand words of writing he set in motion the grand edifice of Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism. Huang Tingjian praised him: "His character was lofty, his heart-mind expansive and free, like the light wind and clearing moon."
Zhou Dunyi's philosophical compass is "From Non-Ultimate to Supreme Ultimate" (wu ji er tai ji), arguing that the Supreme Ultimate contains the dynamism of movement and stillness: movement generates yang, stillness generates yin, and their interaction produces the five phases and all things. Ontologically, the "Non-Ultimate" is not nothingness but the formless and imageless root-state of the Supreme Ultimate—a creative synthesis of Daoist "Non-being" and Confucian "Being." In life philosophy, he takes "sincerity" (cheng) as the spiritual reality linking heaven and humans: "Sincerity is the foundation of the sage." Sincerity is both the authentic reality of the heavenly Dao's operation and the inner ground of human moral life. In his cultivation methodology, he advocates "establishing the ultimate through stillness" (zhu jing li ji),主张 that through empty stillness and removal of desires, the human mind returns to the clarity of the Supreme Ultimate, anchoring moral cultivation in cosmic order.
"From Non-Ultimate to Supreme Ultimate. The Supreme Ultimate moves and generates yang; reaching the extreme of movement, it becomes still, and stillness generates yin; reaching the extreme of stillness, it moves again. — Explanation of the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate"
How does Zhou Dunyi's grounding of moral cultivation in the natural Heavenly Way through "from the Limitless to the Supreme Ultimate" inspire us to overcome modern spiritual disorientation and the mind-body divide?
Both take the highest ontological ground as formless and imageless root—Supreme Ultimate and the One are both the source from which all things flow—and both advocate return to the source through inner contemplation.
Is the highest reality best described as formless origin or structured principle? Do the metaphysical systems of Zhou Dunyi and Plotinus converge on the same mystical insight, or do their fundamentally different commitments make them incommensurable?
Zhou Dunyi absorbs Laozi's cosmogonic framework of "being arises from non-being," but transforms the Daoist principle of natural non-action into the Confucian doctrine of moral sincerity.
Can Daoist cosmology be genuinely repurposed to serve Confucian moral philosophy? Does Zhou Dunyi's synthesis honor Laozi's original vision or fundamentally transform it?
