One of the Five Masters of Northern Song Neo-Confucianism, known as Master Baiyuan. He pioneered "Prior-to-Heaven Image-Number Learning," constructing a precise mathematical model encompassing cosmic evolution, natural rhythms, and cycles of human civilization based on the image-number system of the Book of Changes. His Supreme Ultimate Governing the World used the time units of yuan, hui, yun, and shi to calculate the rise and fall of history, attempting to decode the operational cipher of all things through mathematical logic, charting a unique course within Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism.
Shao Yong, courtesy name Yaofu, ancestral home Fanyang, who moved with his father to Gongcheng (modern Huixian, Henan). In his youth he was extremely self-disciplined: "not using a fire in winter, not using a fan in summer," staying indoors for years, devoting himself to the image-number study of the Book of Changes. He traveled widely seeking teachers, eventually receiving the transmission of the "prior heaven" hexagram system from Li Zhi Cai, achieving sudden comprehensive understanding. In his later years he settled in Luoyang; though poor, he was cheerful and self-contented, naming his dwelling "Nest of Joy" and calling himself Master of Joy. He was close friends with Sima Guang, Fu Bi, and the Cheng brothers, yet repeatedly declined court appointments, preferring the life of a recluse. He often rode a small cart through the streets of Luoyang; citizens, hearing his cart approaching, would rush to welcome him, calling him "Master Shao." Literati, whether they knew him or not, all respected his virtue. His character was warm as jade, approachable and gentle, yet his scholarship was of the highest depth and breadth—a model of achieving great wisdom through the posture of reclusion.
Shao Yong's cosmological principle is "number generates image, image generates all things"—all things are determined and derived from prior-heaven image-number. His "prior-heaven learning" takes Fuxi's trigrams as its core method, advocating "observing things through things" (yi wu guan wu)—not viewing things through subjective feelings and desires but through the principle inherent in things themselves—to attain thorough understanding of the cosmic laws of operation. In historical philosophy, he uses "yuan, hui, yun, shi" (epoch, session, revolution, generation) as hierarchical time units: one yuan contains twelve hui, one hui contains thirty yun, and through this system he calculates the cyclical rise and fall of human civilization, incorporating natural law and human affairs into a unified mathematical framework. His method of "observing things" is both an epistemology and a cultivation theory,主张 the mind pervades heaven and earth, and nature embodies the natural.
"The principles of heaven, earth, and all things are entirely within a single mind. To observe things through things is the way of nature; to observe things through the self is the way of feeling. — Huangji Jingshi"
Shao Yong's attempt to decode the entire cosmos and human civilization through an ultimate system of mathematical and cryptographic symbols (hexagram image-numbers)—how does this spiritually connect with modern science's aspiration to explain everything through mathematical modeling?
Both take number as the fundamental order of the cosmos—Pythagoras uses number to explain musical harmony and planetary motion; Shao Yong uses image-number to derive historical cycles and changes in all things.
Is the cosmos fundamentally mathematical? Do the numerological cosmologies of Shao Yong and Pythagoras represent parallel discoveries of cosmic order, or fundamentally different uses of number?
Shao Yong's prior-heaven image-number and Leibniz's pre-established harmony both presuppose that the cosmos possesses an a priori rational structure, both using mathematical derivation to reveal the internal connections and order of all things.
Does the cosmos possess an a priori rational structure discoverable through mathematical reasoning? Do the systematic philosophies of Shao Yong and Leibniz converge on the same vision of cosmic order?
