Plotinus

Philosophical Overview

Life and Historical Context

The founder of Neoplatonism, possessing extraordinary spiritual charisma. He lived in sustained contemplative detachment, reportedly expressing shame that his soul was housed in a mortal body. He several times achieved ecstatic union with the One in the presence of his students.

Worldview and Philosophy

Plotinus articulated the cosmos as a hierarchy of "emanation" from the supreme One. The One, beyond all being and description, overflows by its own superabundance into successive levels: first the Divine Intellect (Nous), then the World Soul, and finally, where the divine light fades, the darkness of matter. Though embodied in the material world, the soul carries a spark of the One and can return through philosophical discipline, contemplation, and virtue—reascending to fusion with its source.

"The soul's journey home is the great triumph of the alone to the Alone. Awaken the inner eye that has long slept—it alone can behold the eternal light of the Good."

Reflection Question

(The flight of the alone to the Alone)’的星空大凯旋。

Intellectual Encounters

(Aristotle)

Aristotle located reality in concrete individual substances, insisting that universal forms cannot exist apart from matter. Plotinus rejected this as a capitulation to materialism, holding that even a falling leaf is the last dim projection of the supreme One, and that only absolute spiritual unity can redeem the world.

In assessing human nature, should we accept our animal embodiment and seek the golden mean, or refuse to bow to bodily instinct and strive for transcendent spiritualization?
