Parmenides

Philosophical Overview

Life and Historical Context

Leader of the Eleatic school in southern Italy, revered for his moral authority and legislative work for his city. He presented his rationalist philosophy in a solemn poem narrating a chariot journey to the gates of Night and Day, where the goddess of Justice reveals the truth of Being.

Worldview and Philosophy

The founding figure of rational metaphysics. Parmenides established the foundational thesis of Western thought: "Being is, Non-being is not." He distinguished the "way of opinion" (sensory perception of generation and decay) from the "way of truth" (pure logical intellect apprehending reality). True Being is one, eternal, ungenerated, indestructible, and perfect like a sphere; all change and temporal passage are illusions born of sensory deception.

"For it is the same thing to think and to be. Truth is the unchanging, perfect, and beginningless One."

Reflection Question

(Democritus)

Parmenides denied the possibility of void and non-being, insisting that Being is indivisible and wholly static. Democritus rescued the phenomena of change by positing that being is atoms and non-being is void, allowing countless atoms to collide and combine in infinite empty space.

To account for motion, must we grant logical and physical reality to void and non-being, as Democritus proposed?
