A follower of Heraclitus and Plato's first philosophical teacher. In his later years he fell into extreme skepticism, believing that since language itself is in constant flux, any utterance is already obsolete. He reportedly abandoned speech entirely, communicating only by moving his thumb.
Cratylus pushed Heraclitus' doctrine of universal flux to the edge of radical skepticism, declaring that one cannot step into the same river even once. Not only does the river change in every instant, but the wader's body and consciousness transform between lifting and placing a foot. No stable subject can be named or identified, and language only distorts reality; silence is the only honest response to radical impermanence.
