The third head of the Stoic school and its most prodigious systematizer, credited with over 705 works. So central was his contribution that it was said: "Without Chrysippus, there would have been no Stoa." Legend records that he died laughing at a donkey eating figs.
Chrysippus was the great architect of Stoic theory. He formalized Stoic logic into a system of propositional logic rivaling Aristotle's syllogistic. He defended the compatibility of fate with human agency through the "co-fated" argument: illness and seeking a cure are co-fated, so determinism does not license passivity. He thus secured a logical foundation for Stoic moral responsibility within a deterministic cosmos.
