Pico's worldview centers on the 'cosmic chameleon' hypothesis. God assigned every creature — stones, beasts, angels — a fixed, unalterable place in the cosmic hierarchy. Humans can degenerate to the level of beasts or ascend toward angelic intellect. Self-sculpting and self-legislation are the singular privilege of the human condition.

Augustine held that original sin renders humanity morally incapacitated, able only to await divine grace. Pico proclaimed the opposite: human nature is defined by infinite, divine plasticity, requiring no external determination, and through its own intellect humanity can ascend to the highest reaches of being.
